If your daily commute takes you along College Boulevard, you’ve probably noticed the construction—and the road closure that only recently reopened. While having to divert over to Monte Vista may have been an inconvenience, the reason behind all that construction is something pretty exciting for Claremont: the new CMS SportsBowl.

The CMS SportsBowl is set to become a major addition to Claremont McKenna, Harvey Mudd, and Scripps Colleges’ athletic facilities, bringing sports medicine, training, and competition together in one state-of-the-art complex. Once completed, the project has the potential to further put Claremont on the map as a destination for collegiate athletics.

The SportsBowl will be developed in two phases, with the first phase focusing on the southern portion of the approximately 75-acre site. Plans include new baseball and softball fields, a track and field competition venue, a lacrosse and football field, cross-country running paths, and a golf practice facility.

But the project goes far beyond the fields themselves. The SportsBowl is also planned to include spectator seating, locker rooms, meeting spaces, sports medicine services, a parking structure, and a 20-foot-wide tunnel running beneath Claremont Boulevard to better connect the athletic facilities. The site is also expected to become the future home of the ROTC program.

Altogether, the SportsBowl will significantly expand the colleges’ athletic footprint and serve more than 300 student-athletes across multiple sports, including softball, baseball, cross country, football, golf, track and field, and women’s lacrosse.

For Claremont, the impact could extend well beyond college athletics. A premier athletic complex like this has the potential to bring more competitions, visiting teams, families, and spectators into the city—giving them an opportunity to experience our restaurants, shops, hotels, and local businesses while they’re here.

So, while the construction and detours may have been frustrating in the moment, the finished project could be something Claremont benefits from for years to come. I’m excited to see the talent, energy, visitors, and opportunities the CMS SportsBowl brings to our community.
